Exterior stone: its use and maintenance
Exterior stone: its use and maintenance

Stone is a natural element that we can observe from birth, both indoors and outdoors. Throughout history, man has been aware that it is a unique, limited and highly valuable asset, provided by nature. That is why its use must be responsible. When we decide to build or use stone in our homes, both on the outside and inside, we do so knowing that we are dealing with stone. We do it knowing that it is a durable and resistant material, being an investment for the rest of our life.

In nature we can find a great and wide variety of types of stone. Each one of them is different, as they come from different regions and parts of the world.

"No stone is the same, each one of them has unique conditions and characteristics".

It is a versatile element, which can be used in the construction of houses: walls, façades, pavements, sculptures, decorative elements. It is also present as a decorative element: fountains, gardens, cemeteries, or even in kitchen utensils such as plates and glasses. Its high resistance and longevity allows it to be reused. Proper care allows it to be preserved intact.

Unlike other materials used in construction such as metal or plastic, its production requires little energy and therefore generates less greenhouse gases, as well as not generating polluting waste for the environment.

TYPES OF NATURAL STONE FOR EXTERIOR OR INTERIOR USE

"Stone is a good that nature provides us with and which we should use responsibly".

  • Sintered: Composed of minerals from granite, glass, silica and natural oxides. It is extremely resistant and is perfect for interiors, exteriors, facades, etc.
  • Marble: Very resistant to humidity, it requires polishing and care from time to time.
  • Slate: Hard and compact, resistant, waterproof and long-lasting.

We all know that natural stone quarries last for a long time. That is why new materials have been developed, such as synthetic stone, formed from the rest of quartz and marble, such as quartz agglomerate. As are known brands such as Silestone ® or Compac ®.

Some types of stone:

  • Granite: It is the hardest and most resistant to erosion. It has hardly any pores.
  • Quartzite: Smooth or rough, with beautiful veins and colours, it is perfect for exteriors.
  • Limestone: It is hard and non-porous. It presents light veins in natural tones.
  • Sandstone: Sedimentary rock of variable colour, resistant to wear, erosion and corrosion. It can be cut and polished to create ornamental pieces.

We share with you a video that explains perfectly in a few seconds and with images, how stone is a natural element that both in its original habitat and after it has been laid, can suffer damage. It is therefore essential to protect it with the correct treatment.

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED WITH EXTERIOR STONE AND HOW TO SOLVE THEM

The main problem that arises when we have stone in our home is its modification. Especially when it comes to stone on the outside of the property. This is due to stains, which can be caused by humidity, the weather or our own fault. Such as staining with oil, grease or other products.

Of all the products we are going to mention, you can see more information by clicking here → Online shop.

DAMPNESS IN THE STONE

  • Origin Rust: This can be an irreversible problem, but before the installation of the stone it can be prevented with non-acidic products, for stones such as limestone or marble.

When rust appears, removing it can be a complicated job. Acid detergents can be used if the stone is resistant to rust. In addition, we will avoid its reappearance as these products cover the pores of the stone. A perfect example of a detergent is BERT 27.

  • Calcareous origin (salt): When humidity is combined with the appearance of minerals or saltpetre, dark coloured spots appear on the surface of the stone, causing the stone to flake and be destroyed. To avoid this, a protective coating should be applied before installation.

Fungus: Once the stone has been installed in the chosen exterior areas. The accumulation of humidity can generate the appearance of algae or moss. Easily removed with chlorine cleaners, such as BelCare Professional Anti-Algae.

STONE AND METEOROLOGY

The passage of time and weather conditions are inevitable. And these affect the appearance and image of the stone, removing its natural shine. That is why if we want to protect the stone outdoors, we must use protectors.

Stone protectors penetrate to the inner layers, allowing it to breathe and absorb water, as well as protecting it. At MASER we have a wide range of this type of product, an example is IDEA GOLD: Hydro-oil repellent, formulated to prevent the penetration of residues into the pores, as well as to give it shine.

Ice is another agent that can damage our stones, especially outdoor stones. To prevent the stone from suffering and flaking, we must waterproof it. Closing the pores of the surface and we will avoid that the ice and the thawing stays in the interior of our stone. An example is BelCare's HIDROTOP and TOP SEAL protectors, which do not alter the colour of the stone and its breathability.

SPOTS ON THE STONE

Spaces with heavy traffic and work are inevitably affected by stains, which cause deterioration and loss of the original appearance of the stone. These stains occur both indoors and with exterior stone. In order that they do not penetrate deeply, they must be removed quickly. For this purpose, it is advisable to use special detergents and products for each stain or mark.

Adequate prior protection also prevents the penetration of organic elements that can cause problems, such as discolouration caused by leaves, coffee, footprints, spices and tannins of vegetable origin.

If this protection has not been carried out, and we find stains that a common cleaner cannot remove, we should apply some professional solutions such as these:

  • Grease or oil stains, BelCare Professional OIL STAIN REMOVER penetrates deeply and removes the residues.
  • Wine, coffee and rust stains, Bellinzoni SPOT REMOVER paste will penetrate the surface and completely remove any residue.
  • High traffic and slippery surfaces. For these cases the wide range of BelCare Professional ANTI-SLIPPERS, solvent or water based, will prevent slips and stains, preserving the stone.
